Tend a rare prairie at Hastings Sand Coulee
Join FMR to tend a rare dry prairie at the Hastings Sand Coulee Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). Hastings Sand Coulee provides a haven for many rare plants and animals. The deep-rooted native grasses and wildflowers of the coulee also help hold soil in place and act as natural filters for pollutants, meaning less sediment from soil erosion and runoff pollution seeps into the nearby Vermillion and Mississippi rivers.
On this summer evening, volunteers will work with FMR staff to remove invasive plant species, protecting the prairie's threatened native plant species and improving wildlife habitat.
All are welcome, but capacity is limited and registration is required. As always, all tools and training will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level.
This event is part of the national One Mississippi movement of over 20,000 people and 70+ organizations committed to protecting the future of the Mississippi River. Every June, FMR offers events as part of One Mississippi's River Days of Action, a celebration of all the volunteers and advocates working in concert from the headwaters to the Gulf.
Accessibility
Hastings Sand Coulee SNA is a native prairie with no walking trails. We'll be walking through long grasses and up a small hill to get to our work area, which is a short distance from the parking lot. The closest bathroom facility is a gas station about a mile north.
